Why sliding windows let so much in
Sliding windows need space to move, so they’re never fully tight. Over the years the original brush seals wear down, and gaps open up along the side frames and where the two panes overlap in the middle.
Those gaps let in fine dust on windy days and during dust storms, smog in winter, mosquitoes at night, and street noise all day. In summer, your AC’s cool air escapes through them, and in winter cold air blows in.
A wide foam sealing strip closes those gaps while the window still slides, so you don’t need to replace the whole window.
What the window gap sealing strip does for you
Blocks fine dust
Stops dust blowing in through window gaps, so sills and floors stay cleaner.
Cuts street noise
The soft foam seal dampens traffic and outside noise coming through gaps.
Keeps AC and heating in
Stops cool air escaping in summer and cold drafts in winter.
Keeps mosquitoes out
Closes the gaps insects use to get in around the frame.
Wide 30mm coverage
Covers wider and uneven gaps that thin seal strips can’t reach.
No tools needed
Self-adhesive backing. Peel, press and done.
Where to use the window sealing strip
Works on sliding windows and doors in homes, offices, shops and apartments, on aluminium, UPVC and wooden frames.
Which surfaces it sticks to
Fit it on a clean, dry and smooth frame. Clean the dusty track first, and don’t fit it on a wet frame or rough raw wood.
Where exactly to fit it
Stick the strip on the frame, along the edge the sliding pane closes against, so the raised seal presses on the pane when the window is shut. For the best result, also fit a strip along the middle where the two panes overlap.
Is it the right strip for your gap?
- Gaps up to about 7mm on sliding windows or doors: this 30mm strip fits.
- Thin, even gaps on hinged windows and doors: the slimmer E type sealing strip suits better.
- Wider 4–6mm gaps on wooden doors: use the D type foam door seal. For the gap under a door, use the door dust stopper.
How many strips do you need?
| What to seal | Length | Strips (2m each) |
|---|---|---|
| Middle overlap, 4 ft window | About 1.2 m | 1 strip |
| Both side frames, 4 ft window | About 2.4 m | 2 strips |
| All four sides, 4 × 4 ft window | About 4.9 m | 3 strips |
Quick formula: add up the length of every edge you want to seal, then divide by 2 metres and round up.
How to install the window sealing strip
Step by step fitting guide
What you need
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Clean dry cloth
- Brush for the track
Step by step
- Clean the frame. Brush the dust out of the track, then wipe the frame edge the pane closes against. Let it dry fully.
- Measure. Measure each edge you want to seal.
- Cut to size. Cut the strip to length with scissors.
- Peel and stick. Peel a little backing at a time and press the strip onto the frame, with the raised seal facing the pane.
- Press firmly. Run your thumb along the full length so the adhesive grips.
- Slide to test. Close the window. It should slide and lock smoothly, with the seal touching the pane.
Tip: fit it on a dry, warm day. Aluminium frames get very cold in winter mornings, and the adhesive grips best when the metal is warm.
Tips for special windows
Middle overlap
The gap where the two panes meet lets in the most air. Seal it first for the biggest difference.
Old aluminium windows
If the original brush seals are worn, fit this strip on the frame alongside them.
Sliding glass doors
Fit it on the frame edge where the glass door closes, using the same steps.
If the window gets tight
The gap is thinner than the seal on that side. Use the slimmer E type strip there instead.
Do’s and don’ts
Do
- Stick it on the frame, not the moving pane
- Clean the track and frame first
- Face the raised seal towards the pane
- Test the window after fitting
Don’t
- Stick it inside the sliding track
- Fit it on a wet or dusty frame
- Stretch the strip while fitting
- Force a window shut if it becomes too tight
