Why gaps around doors cause so many problems
Wooden doors shrink and swell with the seasons, frames settle, and hinges loosen over the years. The result is a thin gap around the door, often just a few millimetres, but enough to let in a surprising amount of dust, noise and air.

Where to use the D type seal

Which frames it sticks to
The adhesive needs a smooth, clean and dry frame. Avoid rough unfinished wood, paint that hasn’t fully dried, and dusty or greasy surfaces.
Where exactly to fit it
Stick the seal on the door frame, on the stop where the door closes against it, along both sides and the top. Don’t stick it on the door itself. When the door shuts, the D shape squeezes flat and fills the gap.
Is it the right size for your gap?
- You can see light along the side of the closed door, or feel air coming through: this strip fits.
- The gap is at the bottom of the door: use a door bottom seal instead.
- The door already touches the frame with no gap: a thick seal can make it hard to close, so skip it.

Step by step fitting guide
What you need
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Clean dry cloth
Step by step
- Clean the frame. Wipe the frame stop where the door closes against it. Remove dust, grease and old tape, then let it dry.
- Measure. Measure both sides and the top of the frame.
- Cut to size. Cut three pieces with scissors: one for each side and one for the top.
- Peel and stick. Start at the top corner. Peel 10–15cm of backing, press the seal onto the frame stop, and keep peeling as you move down. Don’t stretch the foam.
- Press firmly. Run your thumb along the whole seal so the adhesive grips fully.
- Close the door to test. It should shut smoothly and feel snug. Check for light around the edges.
Tip: leave the door closed for a few hours after fitting. The gentle pressure helps the adhesive bond and the foam settle into shape.
Tips for special doors
Old wooden doors
Gaps are often uneven. Check the gap at the top, middle and bottom, and make sure the widest part is within 4–6mm.
Hinge side
The gap on the hinge side is often smaller. If the door feels tight after fitting, remove the seal from that side only.
Steel doors and gates
Clean off rust and dust first, and make sure the metal is completely dry before fitting.
Sliding windows
Fit the seal on the side frame where the sliding pane closes, not on the moving pane.

Care, cleaning and when to replace
Wipe the seal with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Don’t use strong chemicals or paint over it.
How long it lasts depends on how often the door is used. Check it once or twice a year, and replace it if the foam stays flat, tears, or starts lifting at the ends.

How do I check my gap size?
Close the door and look for light around the edges. If you can see light or feel air, and the door closes without touching the frame stop, the gap is usually in this range.

Will the door still close properly?
